Roodepoort was named after a farm north-west of Johannesburg where gold was discovered in 1886. The town became a municipality, incorporating Florida, Maraisburg and Namberg, in 1904 and achieved city status in 1977. The Florida area is notable for its lake, popular among both water-sport enthusiasts and wild-fowl.
