How this town got its name is still somewhat of a mystery. There is speculation that the town was named after the saint. However another theory was that it was named after the Portuguese ship, the Saint John, which was wrecked at the Mtamvuna River, just 55 miles north. Port St. Johns' gardens and vegetation are luxurious and there are magnificent beaches on either side of Cape Hermes. Visitors will find many great walks through the forests and along the coastline. Great viewpoints and picnic spots are scattered along the way. Fishing, swimming, walking, hiking, bird watching, boating, or just resting in the sun are some of the activities enjoyed in the area. There is a warm mineral spring a few miles outside the town, which the locals call "Isinuka" (the stinking one).
