Heidelberg, situated a mere 40 minutes from the centre of Johannesburg, nestles in the scenic beauty of the Suikerbosrand. The town was established in 1865 at the crossroads of the old wagon trail between Pretoria, Bloemfontein, Potchefstroom and Durban. It was here that Heinrich Ueckerman established a trading post with the help of Irish surveyor, TW Fannin. The name itself originated from the university town Heidelberg in Germany. Heidelberg developed in typical Victorian style and many buildings, dating back to the era, have been beautifully preserved. Heidelberg has a colourful history and during the First War of Independence served as capital of the Zuid-Afrikaansche Republiek (ZAR). For the outdoor enthusiast Heidelberg offers a variety of attractions, including the Suikerbosrand Nature Reserve, hiking trails and camping or caravanning at Heidelberg Kloof, while for the romantics a stay in a beautifully renovated Victorian style Guesthouse is a definite must.
